Happy Hour

Cassian grew up on an ice planet, he's used to cold, but he doesn't like it. He never seems able to get warm enough. When he comes in, its from meeting an informant on a mining planet where ash mixes with the snow, the collar of his parka is grey with it. At the counter, he gets a napkin, nods and goes behind to set up Happy Hour and set his bag down. First he pours himself a hot caf and then adds a generous dollop of whiskey to it. He decides to keep things simple as he warms up.

Once the specials are up, he takes off his jacket and cradles his warm drink while he watches to see who's around in Milliways.

Kylo looks tired when he enters the bar today. Chances are he won't talk about why. Especially not when he sees Cassian behind the counter.

"You again."

When Cassian spots him approaching, his hand drifts lower for a moment, there's a blaster in his bag.

Then he puts it back around his mug, he's warm and working, he'll just keep everything neutral and get through this, "Yes, me."

"Just my luck," he mutters, taking a seat on a stool.

"Caf."

Cassian sets his mug down and turns to find a basic, small mug and fills it up before putting it down on the counter, "Caf."

He tries to keep his thoughts quiet though the possible Jedi, Emcee's troubles and seeing his father here a few months ago linger. If he's not interesting then he'll move on, that's what's kept him safe.

He's part of the Rebellion. That makes him interesting by proxy. Also an idiot, but still.

Kylo nods slightly, a possible acknowledgement of Cassian's caf service.

He would much rather be boring, it lets him blend in better.

At the nod, Cassian picks his drink back up and turns over his gloves on the back counter, a seam's taken some damage.

Can't always get what you want. Not that he doesn't blend and wouldn't if Kylo didn't already know better.

"Second hand gear?"

"They're solidly made,"

The gloves are in better condition than most of his gear, he made a few trades to get them, because he can't do his work with cold hands. If its an insult, its not a deep one, even when he was a boy new things weren't common.

Newer is better. Second hand wears faster, falls apart sooner, needs to be traded for again before you can blink. New is cheaper, in the long run. Kylo assumes he's aware of that.

"I'd hope so."

"I know what I need to do to deal with cold,"

Far more than he'd like which is why most of his cold weather gear is better than others he's had for longer.

"You obviously have no idea what you're doing."

Behind the counter? Joining the Rebellion? Take your pick.

Cassian gives him a look, that was abrupt and he doesn't like that word obvious, "What makes it so obvious to you?"

The vibe he gives off. One can try to be mellow, but you can't fool the Force. Kylo doesn't think he needs to lead with that, however.

"This is the worst caf I've ever had."

[childofrebellion]

"Complain to Bar. I didn't make it,"

If he had, the caf would be even worse. Most people can't look below the surface and Cassian knows how to seem in control.

"I know better." And he can admit it, for once. Bar is not to be trifled with.

[childofrebellion]

"Then you should know its good caf,"

Its better than almost all the caf Cassian usually drinks unless he ends up someplace that makes it decently.

"I've had better."

The First order may not have cookies, but they do have damn good caf.

"Why do you keep doing this to yourself?"

[childofrebellion]

Cassian takes a sip of his caf instead of answering as he can almost hear his father's ghost saying that he didn't want him to be a soldier.

This is his life and he will help bring the Empire down. Which he's said before, he's not giving this man any new ammunition.

"You know you're never going to win."

He casually sips his caf.

[childofrebellion]

"We will, the Empire has created so many enemies across the galaxy, it will help bring itself down,"

He knows about all the people within the Empire who are finding ways to work against it. They might not be connected to the Rebellion yet but their work is helping.

[firstorderknight]

"You really should give your enemy more credit," he offers, just a slight sharp edge to his words. "Not doing so will be your downfall."

[childofrebellion]

"I do, but I also know that they're not as invincible as they present themselves to be,"

Cassian always expects the Empire to do something in the cruelest and usually most efficient way possible.

[firstorderknight]

"Invincible, no. But more powerful than your Rebellion. It's all fruitless."

Damn if he doesn't sound like he knows what he's talking about.

[childofrebellion]

He can hear that certainty, which again makes him wonder when this man is from. Cassian hates not having as much information as this man has about him and that older Anakin wouldn't share what he knew.

The galaxy needs to be free and the Empire is powerful, he won't argue that, "No, if people can feel safer and be free then its not fruitless."

It has to be, that's the belief that he's built his life around, given himself to. He tries to keep his voice steady, not let too much emotion show but his passion comes through.

Kylo finishes his caf and slides the cup back over toward Cassian. One more, barkeep.

"Hope."

It's disturbing.
