oom + dual ep: a door from wakanda

OOM: The morning after this:

During his first morning as a free man, Bucky speaks with Steve, makes an important call, and does his best to express his gratitude to T'Challa before heading to the lab for a consultation. And then...

"Did you mean what you said last night? About wanting to find a place for a drink, or to go dancing."

Featuring NPC versions of: King T'Challa, Princess Shuri, Okoye, Natasha Romanoff, and Steve Rogers (written prior to Steve's return to the bar).

The first figure to step through the door and into the Bar proper is a familiar one – tall, a little scruffy, shaggy brown hair, neatly pinned sleeve where his left arm would be – though the lightness in his eyes and in the way he carries himself is something new.

So is the woman whose hand he holds as he guides her through the door. She's tall and slim, dressed casually in light pants and a white tank top, and the look on her face is one of such comical surprise it's nearly dismay.

"Holy shit," says Sharon Carter. "You were not kidding."

"Better get used to it, if you want to spend time around Chloe."

He looks at Bucky, disturbed.

"I hadn't thought of that."

Yuck.

"I mean, I'll admit that she can be entertaining, but -"

Sharon hides a smile behind her glass of wine.

"Maybe you can come up with something to use instead," she suggests. "Like a secret handshake."

"Just don't try to fake it," he advises. "Kids are holy terrors that way - they can pick up on that kind of thing in an instant."

He looks vaguely horrified.

"I don't want to encourage it - her," he says, holding up a hand.

What if she'd want to bond?

"Then you're probably going to have a pretty tough time getting anywhere with her mom," Sharon points out.

He tilts his head toward Sharon, silently agreeing with her.

He sputters.

"What? No. No! That's not fair. I don't see what her spawn has to do with anything."

"See, it's things like calling her kid 'spawn' that makes me think you might not be ready for a relationship with the detective," Sharon tells him.

"Sorry, friend. Kids and their parents tend to be a package deal."

"She's right," Bucky observes. "Especially if Chloe's committed enough to be doing - what'd you call it? Taco Tuesdays? with her ex."

"Fine. Her little - sugar plum fairy then."

He takes a swig of Scotch.

"And I don't recall anybody saying anything about relationships. I just - think she's interesting."

Obviously.

"Oh," Sharon says, light.

"Then I guess it doesn't matter if her kid or her ex are around."

Butter would not melt in her sweetly smiling mouth.

Bucky seems to find that the right moment to focus on his drink, for some reason.

He looks at her.
Annoyed.

"It's just - she makes me vulnerable."

A beat.

"Literally. And I don't understand why."

The annoyance bounces right off her as she studies him, interested.

"Are you usually invulnerable? Physically?"

"So that's what happened with the proof thing," he murmurs.

"To human weapons, yes," he replies.

"I told her to shoot me in the leg to convince her I was telling the truth about who I am. And she did. And it worked."

He shakes his head.

"It hurt."

Sharon looks mildly approving of this Detective Chloe Decker.

"I can see how that would be a surprise."

Bucky slants a look at Sharon. "Don't get any ideas."

He huffs.

"It only seems to affect me when she's around. That's why I bring her ge- her little, adorable rascal. I wanted to know if there were any signs of her being celestial."

"Who, me?" she tells Bucky, innocent as a spring morning.

Sharon looks back at Lucifer. "Were there? Or is she one hundred percent human?"

"Yes, you."

To Lucifer, he adds, "Well, at least you're not having to get used to being as breakable as the rest of us all the time."

"She seems to be," Lucifer replies. "No matter what the explanation is, I'm sure dear, old Dad has a hand in this though."

The sneer turns his face ugly for a brief second. Then the surface smooths again.

"It was an enlightening experience, but I'd be fine with not having to repeat it."

Sharon's in the middle of a sip of wine when Bucky makes his comment. It makes her choke, just a little.

"Right," she says, when she's finished coughing. The glance she gives him is both fond and incredulous. "Because you're so breakable."

"Hey, I bleed," he protests, mildly.
