Bulding Site II.

Asar-Suti is in the half-finished staff quarters again.

He's been conjuring things for quite a while now: wallpaper, paint, glue, doorknobs, tiles, washbasins, rolled-up carpeting, DIY floowboards, what have you, he's busy making it.

And a few cardboard packages of purportedly easy-to-build kitchen cabinets, for those of the staff who get their own small kitchens in their quarters.

He's got a tan bathtub and nice, fiddly brown-and-green mosaic tiling already secreted away, set aside for Gil's future bathroom.

The place is busy; people are bustling about, demanding more of this or that, asking each other how something works, and lending each other hands, arms and other body parts for the more arduous tasks.

The goal of finishing this weekend looks quite realistic.

Something about Sooty's first comment appeals to the handyman in Jack. He smiles that smartass grin. "Is that a challenge, Deep Purple?"

"Oh, I don't know if there is anything really challenging left here - I am sure I can deal with the mosaic tiling. It's all nicely pre-arranged, after all."

Oh no, no challenge at all.

"Do you need that piece of paper?" Asar-Suti asks, showing the discarded instructions.

"Maybe there's a Roman somewhere we can press-gang into doing the mosaics." Jack looks pleased with himself. See? He's learnt something from Daniel's history-babbling.

He looks disdainfully at the piece of paper. "Nah. Keep it. I wouldn't mind a few power-tools though."

"You mean, like one of those electric screw driver/drill things, the ones that need battery packs? No problem, coming up"

Asar-Suti draws a sign in the air; it glitters violet for a moment, and then he hands Jack the gadget.

"Here - and no battery pack, either. I put in simple magic crystals instead, but they work just the same way."

Jack powers up the drill, and gets the same look in his eye that he gets when holding an MP5 gun, or a Jaffa staff weapon. "Sweet."

"Couldya hold that cabinet up against the wall for me?"

"Course I can."

Asar-Suti holds up the cabinet. "Will you need a spirit level for that?"

All builders and carpenters he's ever heard of are almost obsessive about their spirit levels.

He winks. "Will it be purple?"

"Only if you want it to - I think most of those in this place are greenish. I don't conjure it, just make it come, you know - we already have a lot of them."

As he's holding on to the cabinet, Asar-Suti tries another magical tradition; he says 'Accio spirit-level', and one comes flying.

"Whoa." Jack ducks, and the spirit-level goes whizzing by. Field-soldier's instincts and all that.

"There you are - spirit level. It wouldn't have hit you!"

But perhaps where Jack comes from, flying spirit-levels are potentially dangerous?
