Jack is carving today, outside under the trees with a view of the new grave. He is humming to himself.

Under his hands the block of wood is taking on a curving horn-shape, with a texture as if it were woven from reeds. There are almost no shavings on the ground.

Some time after his conversation with Catherine, Gil decides to go outside.

He sees Jack almost immediately and leisurely makes his way over, listening to some music.

Jack nods and smiles, still intent over his carving.

He sits nearby, content to watch. And frankly to be amazed once again at Jack's skill.

"For the party tomorrow," Jack explains eventually.

[gris_bug_man]

"It's beautiful."

[jack_inthegreen]

"Thanks. Very . . ." He frowns over a tricky bit. "Very old magic."

[gris_bug_man]

"Are the older magics more difficult?"

[jack_inthegreen]

"No, they're simpler--but I want this to look right and I haven't done it for a long time. First I give it shape, a place for the magic to focus . . . and then tomorrow--" He stops and grins. "Tomorrow I'll show you. Mustn't ruin the surprise."

"I have yet to complain about any of your surprises. I will be patient." He grins back.

Jack looks up long enough to smile at him. "You've yet to see my entire repitoire," he says mysteriously and then laughs.

The leaves in the tree overhead turn a richer, deeper green.

"Is that a promise or a warning?" He laughs with him, enjoying the levity.

"A promise, my love. A promise."

[gris_bug_man]

"I look forward to it." He smiles again, watching the carving.

"I spoke to my friend Catherine today. I told her about you."

There is Asar-Suti, wandering down to where Jack is sitting.

The purple god looks decidedly happy, unlike most people in the bar today.

"Hello, Jack!"

"Hello, Asar-Suti." He smiles briefly, concentrating.

"Everybody is making things today," Asar-Suti observes. "Raven was making a dream-ward when I met him."

"This is for the party tomorrow.

"I like Raven. Very pleasant fellow."

"Well, I haven't spoken to him before today, but I'm very much inclined to agree with you," he says. "There's some decent new gods in the bar recently."

Asar-Suti grins at Jack, clearly including him.

Jack beams back.

"I believe he's new. I think I spoke to him the first day he was here. I got to give the rules speech," he adds proudly. "My first."

"Oh yes, that is always fun. Once you give your first rules speech, you are no longer new yourself. Welcome among us regulars, Jack!"

Jack laughs aloud. "Thank you very much."

"I'm really happy about your being here, you know. You were a tremedous help with Gil, and now we're finally happy again, thanks to our friends helping. Seems I didn't have the right scent to let him overcome some inbuilt faunish inhibitions."

Discretion? What is that? Eeep, not to Green!Jack.

"Well, good. I'm glad I could be of assistance."

"I'm glad you were there," Asar-Suti says again.

"What is that thing you are making, though?"

"It's for the party tomorrow," Jack says, smiling at how it's turning out. "A bit of old magic to help me manage things."
