"What were you thinking?" mutters the annoyed redheaded youth in a squire's uniform shouldering his way through the front door. "I don't need to give him any more reasons to... Goddess, where have we got to now?"

The young black cat perched on his left shoulder looks unimpressed by both the lecture and its abrupt end. His eyes, as purple as the lad's, quickly scan the room while the squire looks back through the door and frowns, following it up with an inconvenient sneeze.

"This is impossible."

Faithful casually licks a paw. Humans are quick to use that word to describe what they don't understand.

"Don't be ridiculous. This is where the fourth floor gallery is meant to be, and obviously it is not."

Alan of Trebond, who is really a fifteen year old Alanna in disguise, steps into the room and swallows hard, taking everything in with her hand hovering near her sword hilt. The tavern (for that is what it must be, surely) reminds her a bit of the Dove, but what is it doing in the palace? Why has her Gift gone all...prickly? Faithful seems composed, quite a change from the way he had just reacted to meeting Duke Roger; that at least is comforting.

You could just ask, you know.

"Oh, be quiet and let me figure this out."

[OOC: Alanna has been rebooted! More information can be found here, including thoughts on Alanna meeting pups who knew LJ!Alanna and are perfectly aware Alan is a girl. Please let me know if you have any questions. I'll be around most of the evening, off and on, and I'm always a big fan of slowtimes. :D]

Alanna has been in an especially foul mood since she returned from Milliways.

They are all at court now, preparing for the voyage to Carthak. Soon Alanna and Nuamir will be on their way and Adam would return to Olau with the children, but the Lioness can not seem to shake the dark, worried mood she'd brought back from the end of the universe.

After a few hours of this, Adam manages to coax the truth out of her.

"It's ending," she croaks, explaining her conversation with Blodwen.

Adam frowns. "No, it can't be."

"It is."

"It can't," he insists, gesturing wildly in frustration.

Standing, Alanna scowls at her husband and holds out her hand.

---

It takes a strong push to get the door open. Alanna steps through and sucks in a breath, again feeling that sense of wrongness, and waits.

The Antichrist enters the bar for the first time in years, and if what Alanna feels is akin to small magical shocks all over her skin, Adam looks like someone just dropped a hair dryer in his bath.

His mouth drops open.

"WASN'T ME!"

The Antichrist, bringer of the end of times - but not THIS time, and not the LAST time, either, for what it's worth - settles into a dark corner of the bar and orders a Very Large Drink.

[OOC: Am here, but more than a bit rusty, and not sure for how long. Kinda like the bar.]

[OOM: In Tortall, something that is sometimes taken for granted goes missing.

King Jonathan and George Cooper soon confirm the worst: it’s not just Alanna’s door that has changed. All such passageways have disappeared.

Perhaps they'll return as capriciously as they once appeared. But there’s one person who stands to lose more than the rest if they don't.]

The door, when it opens, gives an unusually audible click. And another when it closes.

"Point taken," Lucifer murmurs.

His hand lingers on the doorknob for a moment, his face taking in the room with no change in expression, and then he heads over to a spare table. The hems of his trousers skim the floor and gather dust on either side of his feet, and his eyes are a dark, inscrutable, Antarctic blue.

He hasn't changed, to look at.

[OOC: Due to the fact that the mun, unlike her character, is only mortal, I'm going to request that you only tag this post if your character already knows Lucifer. My apologies; he'd make a poor new acquaintance, anyway, as this is something of a one-off :)]

[OOM: Before a startling proclamation is read, Jon informs his champion of its contents. She definitely approves.]

Having a dream come true is wonderful.

Having another dream come true might be an embarrassment of riches, Alanna thinks as she shoves open the door with her shoulder, wearing full court dress and a distinctly smug smile. (Or, if one were to look more closely, a distinctly soused smile.)

She doesn't care. It's amazing. Jon is amazing. Gary and Raoul are amazing, despite the fact that they pulled her aside, produced wine at an inappropriate time of day, and forced her to drink it; that's her story, and she's perfectly happy to let it stand -- even if she would rather sit. On a barstool to be exact, and she's happily contemplating how the conversation will go when Grace asks to be sent to the palace for training (which she is certain to do), when Bar offers up a stone arm.

Alanna blinks; squints at it sideways. Definitely a stone arm. She rests her hand over the accompanying note and decides to fortify herself with stew before attempting to read it.

Having Gibbs on board has been good for Elizabeth. She trusts him as much as she can trust any pirate; seeing his familiar face as they set sail, and as she proudly showed him the Empress, very nearly made her cheerful.

Having a firm plan again has been good for her, too.

But, before Nassau, she decides to pay Milliways a visit. As has become her custom, she first checks the lake for the Dutchman, then returns to the bar when she doesn't see the ship. There's only a slight frown, however, owing more to thought than displeasure, and she settles herself at a table in the middle of the room with a drink and a plate of fresh fruit. No apples.

[OOM: Mel, Mike and Raph have a Tortallan holiday. Millitimed to vague but appropriate dates.

First there are babies and inappropriate mentions of pudding. Then, Alanna tricks Raph into riding a pony horse and, much to his regret, making a new friend. Mel gets her promised ride, with the added bonus of a hunt. And, at some point, they all have Thanksgiving dinner.]

Japan is lovely this time of year. This is obvious from the view revealed when the door opens this time: a panorama of temperate forest and mountainside farmland, stepped in tiers to maximise usable land.

The view is brief, as the door shutsbehind the newest patron: a tall man in feudal era armour, peering out at the bar behind a black iron mask, which he removes after a second.

"What the devil...?"

At this very moment in the town of Coeur d'Coeurs, Young Ned was 9 years, 27 weeks, 6 days, and 3 minutes old. His dog, Digby, was 3 years, 2 weeks, 6 days, 5 hours, and 9 minutes old...and not a minute older.

Digby loved to play, and loved to play with Ned. Running down the hill from Ned's house, Digby crossed into a highway where an 18-wheeler slams into him, throwing him into the air.

Ned knelt next to the dog, touching his cheek, consoling his passed friend - or himself, maybe.

Until Digby stood up and ran off.

This was the moment young Ned realized he wasn't like the other children, nor was he like anyone else, for that matter. Young Ned could touch dead things and bring them back to life.

The door to Milliways opens, revealing young Ned and Digby to the bar as a whole, shutting behind them with a short click.

Hopefully our young Ned is also a quick study in his new surroundings.

[ooc: Both boy and dog, here in Milliways. Digby is a golden retriever, Ned is as pictured in icon, minus a constant 'wow' face. Please see the back room post regarding his powers, or IM stephmuji.]

[OOM: Circumstances and people change, and sometimes you don't realize how much until you take a step back and really look around.]

Alanna and Adam haven't been in the bar together -- or at all, in Adam's case -- since they moved, but here they are, hand in hand and looking content. Both seem as if they have been spending a great deal of time outdoors; fairly recently, judging by the mud on their boots.

While Adam chooses a table, Alanna disappears into the office and returns a few moments later with a small stack of papers. She pins her security badge to her shirt and looks down at the table with a smile.

Adam has cider and food waiting.

"You think we could?"
"If you don't lose your nerve."
And if I don't lose mine. - Alanna: The First Adventure

The door opens a crack.

"Did we get everything?" asks the man holding the door ajar with his foot.

"Well," says a woman, "we have the three most important things, don't we? If something is left behind, it can be retrieved later."

Alanna sounds more reasonable than she feels. Her head is spinning with excitement and nerves, though none of it shows on her face until she begins the telltale biting of her lip. So occupied, she strides through the door ahead of Adam, weighed down with bags and Jamie's carrying case. Adam has Grace and Thom. With the occasional editorial grunt, all three carriers are placed gently on a nearby table, as bags are dropped unheeded to the side.

It's a fair bet that this family will never travel light.

Smiling, Alanna -- still far from her usual weight, but infinitely smaller than the last time she was here -- and Adam stare rather helplessly at their children. Forgive them. This is a habit likely to continue for the foreseeable future.

"Welcome to Milliways," Alanna tells them with a grin. "First drink is free, but I'm afraid you're all going to have to wait many years to collect."

The triplets look unimpressed.

[OOM: Things rarely happen the way you expect.

Alanna certainly didn't expect going into labor to be ANYTHING like this.]

The staff door opens.

Supported by Adam and Raven, Alanna waddles through, looking not so much in pain as severely disgruntled. Lucy follows close behind. Slowly but surely, they make their way across the bar and out the front door, Alanna grumbling something about being forced to leave her sword behind.

The front door opens, admitting one very pregnant knight and her husband. Both wear glum expressions and look just a little jumpy. Adam navigates his way to Bar, clutching several notes written on paper bearing the words: From the desk of Dr. Geraldine Lord.

For Bernard, Mike, Archie, George, Thom and Jon )

Meanwhile, Alanna waddles to the bulletin board, glaring at it as if it's responsible for the length of time it takes her to cross the room. She glances at a few notices before tacking her own, also on Dr. Lord's personal stationery, just left of center. With a soft whisper and a flash of purple light, she spells it so Roger, should he put in an appearance, can't read her words.

The sign reads: )

Satisfied, Alanna nods and reads the note again to make sure she doesn't sound too desperate. If anyone wishes to speak with her before she disappears, they are certainly welcome to catch her now.

If not, or following any such conversations, Alanna rejoins Adam and follows him back to their room for a little sadness and frustration, some reassurance and a whole lot of rest.

Raven drops from the rafters, settling himself comfortably a corner booth.

After propping his feet up, he digs in his pocket and takes out a very small notebook, several multicolored pens, and a bit of twine.

The twine he leaves aside, for now.

He's too busy drawing squiggles. Or is that--?

No. It's squiggles.

At least he's not bored.

The door opens and two very unhappy and very tired individuals walk in.

That's it, then. The end. The doctor had been quite frank with them, and for that, at least, Adam was thankful. But try as he may, he can't keep the look of disappointment from his face. Setting Alanna down in a booth, he disappears, only to appear as soon as he'd gone, having fetched them both tea.

Will comes into the bar from upstairs, all ready to go outside and get some work done in the forge, and makes his way through the tables, tucking his hair behind his ears.

Behind his large pointed ears.

"Huh."
