Charlie is a little hungover, which should explain the pot of coffee, big glass of water and pancakes.

The secretive little smile can be explained by how he got the hangover.

Charlie smiles for real. "Excellent. Perfect. Wonderful."

He grins.

"As it should be, then. I'm glad to see you happy, Charlie."

"Thanks." He nods his chin at Joshua. "He's getting so big."

"Aye, he's more than double his birth-weight now."

He reaches back to pet baby-fine hair.

"How's our Seth?"

Well, so much for smiling.

"I haven't seen him since before my birthday."

Richard winces.

"Oh. Sorry."

And he doesn't pry further because he understands that there are some things we Just Don't Talk About.

"Yeah."

Just Not Talking About it doesn't help much. But talking doesn't much, either.

No, sometimes talking about it doesn't help much either.

So.

"Want a piece of bacon?"

He passes one over.

Charlie smiles and takes it. "Thanks, mate." He nibbles it, then says, "It's not like I subsits entirely on bacon. I just like it."

"No, you subsist on pancakes, fruit, and tea. I think you're secretly a hummingbird."

"Waffles, fruit and tea," he corrects.

"Fine, fine, soft bread product of choice, fruit, and tea. You're still avoiding the hummingbird accusation."

"I'm missing a few vital parts, like wings and feathers and a very long tongue."

Well, maybe not that last one.

"And wouldn't you pay a lot for that last one?"

Richard knows little of the Charlie tongue.

Charlie demonstrates.

Richard borks a little.

"Now I know why Darien loves you so much."

"It's one of the reasons," Charlie says serenely and sips his tea.

Richard shakes his head a bit and finishes his breakfast, and then fixes a bottle for Joshua. He pulls out a sewing needle and adds the required amount of blood and then looks over to Charlie.

"Want to donate a bit to a hungry baby?"

"Sure." He reaches out his hand. "Hope he won't mind if it tastes different."

"No. He won't mind at all."

He jabs Charlie's finger and lets the blood drip in.

"Thanks, mate."

He pulls Joshua out of the sling and feeds him.

Charlie gasps at the jab and sucks his finger to get the blood to clot.

After a moment he chuckles and sings, "'Feed me, Seymour, feed me all night long!'"

Richard cracks up and nearly drops the bottle. Joshua squawks.

Hey! I'm eating here!

"Oh, my god. It sort of frightens me how accustomed I've become to all this."

"What're you going to do when he grows up? He can't be a merchant banker or summat and eat blood for lunch at the office."

"Gary's Gran is weaning him over to real food. He only needs a small amount of blood, and can get it fairly discretely."

"That's good, at least." He inspects the jab point and sucks on his finger again.

"And how's Andrei?"
