Sam was oblivious. So much eyecandy, so little time.

Role change!

Danny wasn't liking it. At all.

"...Come on, hurry up. We have no idea what time it really is here--the sun might be setting soon."

"I think -- he's wearing an Evil Crazed Mutant t-shirt, Danny." Sam's fork was stuck in mid-air. "...Wow. I thought I was the only person who knew about them. Maybe we should compare goth band notes..."

"...Why don't we go outside and you can, uh, take your pancakes with you?" Danny suggested.

He didn't like this bitter feeling roiling in the bottom of his stomach.

"No, no, I got to analyze this guy. See if he's wearing clothing lines I recognize." She craned her head. "I think he's reading an Edward Gorey biography..."

"...Since when have you been, like, this interested in guys?" Danny shot at her. "I mean, first it was Gregor, and look how well that worked out..."

Sam narrowed her eyes at him. He had not just gone there.

"Oh, excuse me, mister, 'Oh, hold on guys, let's just sit here for another ten minutes so that I can stare at the glory that is Valerie in a Nasty Burger hat.'"

"...I so don't do that," said Danny, rolling his eyes at her. "And at least I manage not to drool."

"Ohoh. You don't do that?" Sam rolled her eyes toward the heavens, and faked a Danny-being-whiny voice. "'Do you know how hard it is to like someone you can't be with?'"

"First of all, I totally don't sound that whiny, second of all--I mean, come on! I brought you here to show you around and hang out and stuff, and you're just...sitting here drooling over random weird guys."

"Oh. Excuse me. No. You're the one who left me on my own for -- what? hours? -- Last night, then came back, fell in my lap, and couldn't get your own butt off the floor!" She glared. "I think I deserve some 'drooling' time, don't you think?"

Opening his mouth to speak, and then realizing he didn't have a leg to stand on, he snapped, "Well, fine. When you're done drooling and want to go home, I'll be out back!" His eyes flashed green, just for a second.

Then he got up and stormed out the back door.

"Danny--"

Sam got that uncomfortable feeling that usually meant she'd opened her big wide mouth... a little too wide.

She shifted in her seat guiltily and finished her pancakes, looking at her feet, giving him a few minutes to brood, and then followed him carefully to where the back door was, and walked in.

She would find him sitting by the lake, still human, since that was something that needed to be clarified, whinging rocks out on the water as hard as he could.

Plunk!

Kerplunk!

He couldn't get them to skip. That would require him to not throw them so hard.

She took one gently down from behind him, and let it fly; it skipped gracefully at least three meters before sifting to the bottom. "Hey."

"Done oggling random guys now?" he said petulantly, but with less of the venom from before.

"Sorry," Sam said, simply, and sat down next to him. She wasn't sorry for the oogling, but was for making him upset -- although she didn't know why, and told him so. "Don't know why you're so upset about it. It was only five minutes."

"...Yeah, well." He sighed, and the rock he was about to throw he only threw a measly few feet, with a kerplunk.

"I...I'm still kind of mostly mad at myself. Because I really wanted to, y'know, show you around and explore this place with you and stuff, but then I ruined it--I mean, I had to go off and help Ray--I owe him bigtime--but I didn't have to get drunk and stuff," he said. "And so now I was all, y'know, excited about finally being able to, and, um, I dunno, I just got kind of impatient or something."

"Oh, Danny," Sam said, turning to look at him, "I didn't mean it about the getting drunk stuff. I swear I didn't. I'm really sorry. I shouldn't have said that. I just..."

She sighed. "You're always... it's always 'Paulina this' and 'Did you know that Valerie does this?' and I guess... I guess I feel like I should have that chance, too. With someone who isn't a jerk."

She shifted. And who isn't blind.

"...Okay, I am huge jerk, because you're right. Sorry," said Danny, considering all that for a moment.

It was a lot easier to let the anger go when they were out here in the open air, and she was talking to him and not oogling at some other guy that was a lot cooler than him in her eyes.

"Danny," Sam sighed, "you're not a jerk. I was referring to Gregor in that sentence."

She reached out and squeezed his hand. "It's okay. I promise. Just... don't storm out like that again, okay? Sorry I didn't listen, but... still."

"Do you wanna go looking around now?" Danny asked, trying to make it up to her. "It's huge back--the lake practically goes on forever, and there's that weird creepy shack over there, and the woods and stuff. And there's, like, a tiny little house in a hole in the ground. And a forge. And stables, and a greenhouse. There's tons of stuff out here."

Sam thought for a minute.

"Can we... just hang out here, for a bit?" She looked around. "This is... really nice."

"Oh. Um. Okay," Danny said, looking over at her. With her hair down like that, she looked older. Less like she did when they were kids and more...something.

It made him feel weird and he couldn't figure out why.

Sam flopped down to the grass, arms spread out wide, and took a deep breath, hair sprawled everywhere.

Sunshine felt good.
