Carlotta is in the main bar, with her school report.

She has to laugh, just a little, when she sees her French result. Because of a certain bet she has with a certain king in the forge.

She looks around for him; she'll try outside if he's not in.

"Yes, I suppose it would be." said L, taking a bite of cake. "Are you sure you don't want some cake?"

"No thank you, I already ate." Carlotta says again. "I'm an acrobat so I have to eat properly."

"Well, by any means, would you hand mw that bowl of sugar cubed behind you, my coffee isn't nearly sweet enough."

Carlotta passes it over.

"What do you do?" she asks the odd little man.

"As a career?" asked L, dropping a few cubes into his coffee.

Yes, he must go through this routine every time, the coffee is never sweet enough.

"Yes. If you're unemployed then forget I asked."

"No, I'm not unemployed." said L, stirring in a few more sugar cubes. "I am a, shall we say, a rudimentary ... problem solver, of sorts"

Raised eyebrow.

"If you're a criminal, I'm not going to tell on you."

L looked up at Carlotta.

"Ma'am, I can indeed assure you, I am the exact opposite of a criminal."

"Oh, a spy." Carlotta says in a whisper.

"Don't worry, I won't tell that either."

L just decides to let her believe he is a spy. It's better than thinking he is a criminal, after all.

"Well, thank you."

"Well you're doing good in the world." Carlotta says. "Which is more than most people do."

"Well, other than being a student," said L, turning to Carlotta, "what else do you do?"

"I ride, do a bit of part time work at the local stables." Carlotta says. "The head doesn't know I work there of course..."

"Ahh, you're an equestrian."

"Yes. I train them to do tricks too."

"I've never been a horse person." responded L. "Or rather, I've never been an animal person."

"Why not?"

"They frighten me."

"Really? But horses can't do much to you if you're not on them."

"I don't know," said L, looking away. "I just ..."

"You should come out back and meet Orion and Bramble, they're very gentle."

"That's very nice of you," said L. "But I don't think that would likely be possible. My aforementioned career keeps my schedule very tight. I just come here to collect my thoughts. Also, they have excellent cake! But, who knows? It might be possible one day."

"But time is stopped in your world; we'd only be in the garden."

"Oh, by "out back," you meant out back of here." said L, feeling foolish. Sure, I'd love to see them."
