Job done. The bad guys are dead and the girls are home safely. Overall, Jay’s in a pretty good mood. Time to kick back.

He may have had a few before he started his shift but that doesn’t seem to be affecting his game much.

"You certainly offended the makers of that scotch." Jay shakes his head, smiling.

"Ah, they'll live, I reckon," Sherral says brightly.

"I choose to be indignant on their behalf." Jay throws back, enjoying the banter.

Sherral grins, taking a quick sip of his scotch. "I warrant I could make you less indignant if I tried."

Jay tries to keep up an indignant look but a grin ruins it. "You could try..."

"Aye, I could. I do have a point to prove first, though. Go search around and see if you can find a bottle of some Gallan whiskey, will you?"

Jay roots around under the bar, searching for a bottle matching Sherral's request. "This one?"

"Aye, that'll do just fine."

Jay nods and pours them each a glass. Just enough to try. He sold it, and them pours himself a larger glass. "Okay, yeah. That's pretty damn good."

"If there's aught my people do well, it's alcohol," Sherral notes cheerfully.

"And captains." Jay teases, pouring them both another drink.

"Then we should hope I never get promoted, lest me efficiency drops sharply," Sherral says wryly.

"I'm pretty sure your men would revolt if your hierarchy tried to take you away by promoting you." He tops up both their glasses. "How are things going with the new boss?"

"I think you overestimate how attached they are," Sherral chuckles. "I've yet to meet the man. Which isn't entirely unusual. A Consul has more to deal with than just keeping the garrisons in line."

"I think they respect you more than you give them credit for." And maybe fear a little.

"Somehow I doubt your garrison's likely to get out of hand."

"I should probably trust your judgement on that," Sherral admits. "You spent a fair amount of time amongst them."

Jay raises his glass in a toast. "You have good men with a good leader."

"You are a terrible flatterer," he remarks wryly, raising his glass.

"Yeah, but you've known that about me for a while now." Jay grins and sips the whiskey. "I think I have a new favourite drink!" A little drunk? Maybe!

"Don't drink it too quickly," Sherral warns. "It has a kick."

Jay holds out a hand that's steady as a rock despite how much he's had to drink. "Still think you could drink me under the table?" He asks playfully. He may be drunk but he's still Jay.

With a grin, Sherral dips his head to kiss Jay's knuckles quickly. "Aye, I reckon I could."

Jay shifts to pull Sherral close, his other arm draped around his waist. "It's a pity I've got a head-start on you then. Or do you plan to take advantage of that?"

"I didn't know we were doing the drinking contest now," Sherral says with a laugh, sliding an arm loosely around Jay. "Otherwise I'd have made sure to keep pace with you."

"I'm sure there are other ways you could keep pace with me." Jay leers, making the most of their closeness to lean against Sherral.
