I've known boys like Romeo.

They don't improve.

Parker grimaces. "Well, there's living life passionately, and then there's living life unfocused and without even trying to survive."

Exactly.

[she glances at the sword scar crossing her left palm]

The kind of boys to fight over riding gloves.

Nodding, Parker says, "He fight you for your riding gloves?"

A small smirk, takes the intensity out of the question, "Because I always thought Romeo had a thing for Mercutio."

No. Gary and Raoul did. I had to stop them. And...

[a flicker of a smile]

Mercutio certainly has a thing for Romeo, that I can tell.

"Oh, yeah, all those speeches about idle dreams. He was sick with love," he says the last in the most terrible English accent ever.

"Gary and Raoul?" Parker asks.

Gareth the Younger of Naxen, now Prime Minister, and Raoul of Goldenlake.

"Powerful men," Parker comments.

Aye, I grant you. Still had them twined around my little finger, though.

"Wouldn't expect anything less," Parker says lightly.

"'welcome," Parker says. "After you're done, you should try his comedies. I think that there's one about a twin sister and brother who switch places."

Oh, now, that doesn't sound familiar, does it?

Parker keeps a straight face. Barely. "Not at all. Never heard of anything like it."

Poor Alanna. Someone else has used the idea and taken none of the credit.

"In your world. Shakespeare's pretty famous where I come from," he says.

Oh?

"Yeah," Parker says. "They force kids in school to read his plays. It's probably the only reason I know anything about them."

Force?

"Well, not with guns or anything. It's just required." Parker's opinions on American schooling are fairly low.

Ah, I understand.

"You hung out with Thom at the monastery, right?"

Convent,

[she corrects.]

They go to the convent and then the monastery. And yes, I did.

Parker waves his eyebrows. "And what did they teach you at the monastery?" he asks, deeply amused.

Convent. A convent is for girls, a monastery is for boys and priests.

And how to be a lady. How to flirt and dance and send invitations. Host parties, do the accounts, basic history, etcetera.
