Some time ago for romantic purposes Karkat came into possession of a large holographic video display. He has been nursing an idea for a while, but the weather outside in mock-Scotland has been too grotesque to make it feasible.

Tonight, however, the grotty mist has finally stopped and when Karkat rises with the moon he discovers weather that is almost practically tolerable, especially once he deploys a firepit and spreads a tarp over the damp ground.

He fiddles with the projector a bit, finally managing to project the king-sized screen he wants over the lake. The first romcom he cues up is Pretty Woman, and he grunts with satisfaction as he plops himself into an stuffed husk he hauled down from his room and the familiar opening begins to unfold.

Welcome to the drive-in. The second film in the triple feature will be Grosse Pointe Blank, followed by My Best Friend's Wedding.

Teresa stands on a small hill, looking at the projected screen with some curiosity. When pictures appear on it, she starts, surprised.

Eventually she walks down to where there appears to be a person watching the thing. Perhaps he can explain what it is.

Karkat is reclining in a stuffed husk, which is... what it sounds like, but resembles an overgrown beanbag chair (with tiny vestigial legs). He glances up at the fairly-spooky human as she approaches. "HEY."

His voice is loud but not a shout; hoarse and brusque, but with no particular unfriendliness.

"Hello."

Teresa's voice is naturally soft, but otherwise she has no concept of an 'indoor voice,' or of knowing how one is expected to talk in front of movies. She stops a few meters away from him, and points at the screen. "What is that?"

"IT'S A MOVIE," he says, biting off a question about what kind of piece of shit civilization doesn't even have movies.

"IT'S LIKE... HANG ON, HOW PRIMITIVE ARE YOU? DO YOU KNOW WHAT A BOOK IS?"

Karkat glances over at her. "IT'S A MOVIE," he says, helpfully.

"Uh, yeah, I know it's a movie. But...?"

Much of this movie makes little or no sense to someone who grew up in a post-apocalyptic dystopia.

Initially it doesn't make much sense to an alien, either, but Karkat has seen it before. "SO..."

"WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? I HAD THIS PROJECTOR AND I THOUGHT OTHER PEOPLE MIGHT WANT TO WATCH A MOVIE TOO. I EVEN PICKED A HUMAN MOVIE."

Well, fly-in, in this case. Surf-in?

Interesting. Enzo's been to drive-ins before, but he didn't expect one here. Though, on further reflection, he can't imagine why he wouldn't.

Let's see what's on.

Oh, hey, a green guy. That's different.

Karkat gives him a grudging nod; green dudes are kind of a sore subject. But this one does not seem to have a skull for a head, so he gets the benefit of the doubt.

Enzo nods back, cautiously, as he drifts down to let his surfbaud hover a few feet off the ground. He does know that the grey people with horns are trolls. Hasn't spoken to any of them yet, though.

Okay, so trolls make him uneasy. He's from cyberspace. It's a thing.

Still, some of his friends are friends with them, so the benefit of the doubt will be likewise given. "What're we watching?"

"GROSSE POINTE BLANK, IT HAS JOHN CUSACK IN IT." This is kind of an unnecessary thing to say, since John Cusack is visibly murdering someone on a fifty-foot screen right now.

Do sprites know who John Cusack is? Bluh bluh universal constant and so on.

By now, Poins has learned very well that any apparitions he may see are likely man-made marvels, and not the devil's work.

That, said, he gapes at those large pictures, that giant mummery, lingering above the lake, and must admit he cannot make either head or tail of it.

"Good even, Karkat Vantas!" Poins says. "Hast thou then put these apparitions in the sky, like to a spectacle upon a stage, but played up in the mists?"
